Shark Quest Itinerary
M/V Hurricane – 9 May 2018
Hurricane – famous for Southern Red Sea safaris- sailed once again for a Shark Quest week. A mixed group of divers – British, Irish and Australian – all ready to search the southern Red Sea for Sharks!
Starting the week in warm 24 degree waters at Ras Torombi the divers were very pleasently surprised to see a dugong on the second dive at the surface next to the boat. This is one of the sightings that makes the Southern Red Sea diving so special. The night dive had a big swell and visibility was limited but proved to be a great dive with a turtle, batfish, giant moray eel and lionfish on the prowl for their dinner.
For the second day of diving the boat headed to the Brothers – two remote islands in the Southern Red Sea. Water temperature rose to 25 degrees and the currents were strong. The quest for sharks proved successful with a total of 8 Hammerheads, 4 Oceanics, 1 Grey Reef, 2 White Tips and a Thresher shark.
Hurricane moored up at Big Brother for the thrid day of diving. The wind had picked up and the sea conditions were quite rough but Hurricane’s steel hull made her a very stable platform and exiting the water was relatively easily. Only one Oceanic this day but there was plenty of activity with jacks hunting in the morning and barracuda, tuna plus a very curios cornet fish in the afternoon.
Daedalus on Day 4 was a very warm 27 degrees and had a nice gentle current. An excellent start to the day with two Hammerheads, barracuda and snapper. Daedalus really did not disappoint with a further Hammerhead, Grey Reef, Oceanic and a Silky shark being sighted during dive 2 and 3.
Staying at Daedalus for Day 5 – the visability was nothing short of excellent and two hammerheads were sighted during the first dive. The current picked up for the second dive – Anemone City / North drift and was at times going up and down. An exciting dive along the stunning wall but no sharks. The last dive of the day – the team were determined to find sharks and chose to dive the South Plateau as a drift. The gentle current at the start picked up towards the south east corner. A fabulous dive with a lone large barracuda, school of brracuda, large silky, napolean, tuna, and 2 hammerheads!
As the week drew to an end the boat headed to Elphinstone. The sea conditions were a little rough but one Hammerhead and two Grey Reef sharks put in an appearance. The last dive of the week was at Marsa Shona. a more sheltered site chosed to avoid the rough conditions at Elphinstone. With both a honeycomb and a feathertail stingray plus two large green turtles it was a good end to the week. A large pod of dolphins even passed by to bid the divers fairwell as they left the site.
